Turning the Season was an exhibition exploring the social and cultural phenomenon of the British Season – the traditional annual period in the spring and summer when the British social elite holds balls, dinner parties and charity events. The ‘Season’ compasses prestigious events such as Cheltenham Festival, the Grand National, The Boat Race, Badminton Horse Trials, Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, and Goodwood Revival.
The exhibition included a series of new commissions in sculpture (Trophy Wall by Sam Spenser and Lily Pond by Diane House), photography (Unsaid by Jules Wright and Thomas Zanon-Larcher), dance (Ride by Luca Silvestrini), and literature (a body of short stories by Romesh Gunesekera, Jackie Kay, Deborah Levy, Toby Litt and Erica Wagner). Alongside commissions, two large-scale sculptural works were installed in the grounds of the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station – Wing by Eilís O’Connell and Portrait Light by Fredrikson Stallard. Ilona Sekacz was commissioned to create a score for the exhibition.
