To Step Across the Line
Kapka Kassabova

We commissioned writer Kapka Kassabova to respond to the theme of borders that have been in our thoughts throughout that year (2017). We crossed many of them by travelling and even more by challenging ourselves to try new things and to think in new ways.

To Step Across the Line was first published as a standalone digital publication on 20 December 2017 and share with our extensive mailing list as a ‘gift of writing’ alongside seasonal greetings that year. Kapka’s essay gave the title to our next print publication that came out in August 2018.

Kapka Kassabova is the author of Border: a Journey to the Edge of Europe (Granta 2017), Twelve Minutes of Love – a tango story (2011), and Street Without a Name (2008). Raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, she was educated in New Zealand and now lives in the Scottish Highlands.
