Elina Brotherus returns to Oman with a body of work commissioned by The Wapping Project and produced during Resonance: Oman 2019-20, a programme where Elina both worked on her new series of photographs and mentored a group of early career women artists from Oman. The exhibition, forming part of the first edition of Raneen Festival presented within traditional houses in the historic area of Muscat, features works Elina made in Oman in December 2019 and first shown at Stal Gallery, Muscat, in March 2020.
Raneen Festival is presented by the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and has been curated by David Drake, an independent curator, writer and producer, former Director of Ffotogallery, the national development agency for photography and lens-based media in Wales.
The festival also includes new works by Ruqaiya Mazar, who participated in Resonance: Oman 2019-20 and Resonance: Finland 2023, and Khadija Al Maamari, who participated in Resonance: Finland 2023.
On Sunday 24 November, The Wapping Project’s Director – Marta Michalowska – will be in conversation with Elina Brotherus, discussing how artistic careers are shaped by mentors and supporters encountered in the early stages of one’s creative journeys.
