Spring was the exhibition of Elina Brotherus’s first video installation under the same title alongside a series of works in photography. Elina was shortlisted for the Citigroup Private Bank Photography Prize (Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize since 2005) at the Photographers’ Gallery for this exhibition.

Spring is about longing for the reappearance of light after dark winter. Each part of the triptych presents a horizon, which references Elina’s photographic body of works about horizons, but in Spring the horizon is moving. The landscape flows by the spectator in a continuous, calm, never-ending movement. All three projections are looped, and as they differ in length, the work produces new combinations all the time. The 5.1 sound coming from all directions is composed from different wind and rain sounds, with a short section of blackbird and skylark singing.

Spring was a commissioned by The Wapping Project as a site-specific installation in 2001.
